Malawi leader to be inaugurated

Malawi’s President Bingu wa Mutharika is due to be inaugurated for a second term after a landslide election win.
The election commission said he had won more than 2.7m votes, with nearest rival John Tembo taking nearly 1.3m.
Mr Tembo cried foul but his opposition coalition backer, ex-President Bakili Muluzi, congratulated the incumbent.
Mr Mutharika’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) also won a majority in parliament. Regional heads of state are in Malawi for the inauguration.

Yesterday, Jacob Zuma, was sworn in as South Africa’s President. What is instructive is the peaceful transition that South Africans have allowed themselves. Whereas peaceful transitions should be the norm, this has been a rare occurrence in most of Africa.

Jacob Zuma, the man expected to become South Africa’s president after his ANC party’s electoral victory, has said he will work to unite the country.
“We have gone through a difficult period… it is now time to put it all behind us,” he said in Pretoria after official results were announced.
The ANC won 65.9% of the vote but failed to obtain its previous two-thirds majority.

Zuma soars in SAfrica polls as graft case dropped

South Africa’s presidential frontrunner Jacob Zuma heads back on the campaign trail Tuesday free of graft charges just two weeks before polls that his ruling party is expected to sweep.
Zuma is tipped to become president after general elections on April 22 which the African National Congress (ANC) is likely to win just shy of the nearly 70 percent majority it now holds in parliament.

Mugabe set for lavish birthday

Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe is preparing to celebrate his 85th birthday at a lavish party paid for by his supporters.
They have raised $250,000 (£176,000) for the event, being held in Chinhoyi, north-west of the capital, Harare.
The new prime minister, former opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, is expected to be attending.
The event comes days after Zimbabwe asked other African countries for $2bn (£1.4bn) to rescue its failing economy.
Mr Mugabe turned 85 on 21 February but his party is being held a week later.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) — Zimbabwean police called off an opposition rally in their capital Sunday, prompting accusations of political interference on the eve of a regional summit on the southern African nation’s political crisis.
Opposition spokesman Nelson Chamisa said leaders of his Movement for Democratic Change had organized the rally to update members on their position headed into the talks, set to take place in South Africa on Monday.

Leaders of Zimbabwe’s three main political parties have begun negotiations to implement a stalled power-sharing agreement aimed at ending 10 months of political stalemate. The two major parties appeared to harden their positions on the eve of the talks.
The presidents of South Africa and Mozambique arrived in Zimbabwe and immediately began talks with President Robert Mugabe, Prime Minister-designate Morgan Tsvangirai and the leader of a third party, Arthur Mutambara.

ACCRA (Reuters) – Ghana’s opposition leader John Atta Mills was declared the winner of a closely fought presidential election run-off on Saturday, sweeping his party back to power after eight years.

South Africa said on Friday that it will hold the next year’s presidential elections peacefully.
Speaking to media at the Intelligence Services Day in memory of National Intelligence officials who have died in the past year, South African Intelligence Minister Siyabonga Cwele said while “vibrant political debate” is expected, the security sector is prepared.
