Dutch voters gave a populist, anti-immigrant party its first four seats ever in the European Parliament, sending a warning to incumbent European governments, according to exit polls.
The triumph for the Party for Freedom and its leader Geert Wilders kicked off four days of European Union-wide elections involving more than 12,000 candidates competing for more than 730 seats.
Mr. Wilders’s party was expected to win four of the 25 seats allocated to the Netherlands, according to exit polls by Dutch news agency ANP.

Voters in Mongolia are electing a new president, a year after vote-rigging claims in parliamentary polls triggered deadly riots in the country.
Current President Nambaryn Enkhbayar of the former Communist party is being challenged by Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj of the main opposition Democratic Party.
Polls opened at 2300 GMT on Saturday are due to close at 1400 GMT on Sunday.

Yukio Hatoyama has been chosen as leader of Japan’s opposition Democratic Party, in the run-up to parliamentary elections later this year.
The 62-year-old grandson of a former prime minister replaces Ichiro Ozawa, who stepped down amid a fund-raising scandal on May 11.
The Democrats have promised to cut wasteful spending and bureaucracy.
General elections are due by October, and Saturday’s opinion polls suggest the Democrats may be ahead of the long-ruling conservative Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which has ruled for about 50 years.

India’s ruling Congress party looked set to take an unexpectedly decisive general election victory as the 400 million-plus votes cast during the month-long election were counted this morning.
The party defied exit polls and analysts’ predictions, which had indicated a much closer result. With more than 70% of the vote counted the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) was set to take more than 250 seats and the opposition alliance led by the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) forecast to take 160.

The Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance said on Saturday the ruling Congress party-led alliance had the biggest mandate after a general election.
“The Congress has the biggest mandate,” said senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley.
“I think if Congress wants to compliment some of its leaders in this hour of victory, I think they’re entitled to do so.”
The Congress-led alliance was projected to get about 250 seats of a total 543 parliamentary seats.

A group of 13 junior lawmakers from the governing Grand National Party (GNP) called for a reshuffle of the government, Cheong Wa Dae and the party, Monday, following a crushing defeat in by-elections last Wednesday.
The self-proclaimed reformists, who were first elected to the National Assembly in the general election in April last year, also called for a national convention in the near future to elect new leaders.

Indian newspapers applauded Friday the millions of voters who cast their ballots during the first day of marathon general elections, despite attacks by Maoist rebels in several states.
“Red Terror can’t stop India’s Ink,” ran the headline in the Hindustan Times, which noted a turnout of around 50 percent in those states where Maoists, known in India as Naxals, had threatened to disrupt the polls.
