Deal to end crisis in Mauritania

Mauritania’s military rulers and opposition leaders have signed an agreement to end a political crisis following a coup last August.
Under the deal, former junta leader General Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz is suspending his campaign in presidential polls that had been set for 6 June.
The vote is now due to take place in July, and the opposition is expected to contest it.

Nigerian President Umaru Yar’Adua has urged parliament to quickly pass electoral reform legislation to avoid a repeat of last weekend’s botched election in southwestern Ekiti state, a spokesman said on Sunday.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) last week delayed the gubernatorial election in Ekiti after voting in the town of Oye, home to 18,000 voters, was disrupted by security threats from “politicians and their gangs.” INEC has rescheduled voting in Oye for Tuesday.

Jacob Zuma, the man expected to become South Africa’s president after his ANC party’s electoral victory, has said he will work to unite the country.
“We have gone through a difficult period… it is now time to put it all behind us,” he said in Pretoria after official results were announced.
The ANC won 65.9% of the vote but failed to obtain its previous two-thirds majority.

Zuma soars in SAfrica polls as graft case dropped

South Africa’s presidential frontrunner Jacob Zuma heads back on the campaign trail Tuesday free of graft charges just two weeks before polls that his ruling party is expected to sweep.
Zuma is tipped to become president after general elections on April 22 which the African National Congress (ANC) is likely to win just shy of the nearly 70 percent majority it now holds in parliament.

Guinea-Bissau’s army chief discovered a 200-kilogramme cocaine stash a week before his assassination, which preceded the murder of the country’s president, an army officer said Thursday.
Following General Batista Tagme Na Waie’s killing, soldiers murdered President Joao Bernardo Vieira earlier this week in an apparent reprisal in the West African nation.

Guinea-Bissau’s National Assembly speaker Raimundo Pereira has won parliament approval to replace the West African nation’s slain leader.
Lawmakers voted on Tuesday to uphold the constitution and automatically give the speaker the post of interim president on Monday following the assassination of President Joao Bernardo Vieira near his home.
“We have just applied the constitution in choosing the parliament speaker as interim head of state,” head of the majority PAIGC party’s group in parliament, Antonia Mendes Pexeira, told reporters.

Mugabe set for lavish birthday

Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe is preparing to celebrate his 85th birthday at a lavish party paid for by his supporters.
They have raised $250,000 (£176,000) for the event, being held in Chinhoyi, north-west of the capital, Harare.
The new prime minister, former opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, is expected to be attending.
The event comes days after Zimbabwe asked other African countries for $2bn (£1.4bn) to rescue its failing economy.
Mr Mugabe turned 85 on 21 February but his party is being held a week later.

Zimbabwe’s opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has been sworn in as prime minister in a unity government with President Robert Mugabe.
Mr Tsvangirai won the first round of last year’s presidential election – but he withdrew from the run-off, citing violence against his supporters.
However he later agreed to share power with Mr Mugabe.
Problems facing the new government include a cholera epidemic, a collapsed economy and a 90% unemployment rate.

A key opposition leader in Madagascar has called for more protests against the president, a day after security forces killed 28 of his supporters.
Andry Rajoelina, who was dismissed last week from his post as mayor of the capital, Antananarivo, spoke as he visited injured supporters in hospital.
He is locked in a power struggle with President Marc Ravalomanana, who he says should step down.
